Day Trips: Geyserville

When I want to get away from the familiar in Sonoma County, I go to Geyserville. Whether I am exploring on my own, or with the husband and toddler in tow, I always know I will have a good time driving to and exploring this beautiful town. While there are lots of amazing shops and restaurants to explore and experience, I’ve included a few of my favorites here to take some of the guess work out (in case going anywhere without a plan and with kids leaves you feeling frazzled).

Catelli’s    21047 Geyserville Ave., Geyserville, CA 95441

Catelli’s is a third generation Italian inspired restaurant located smack dab in the middle of the main street in Geyserville. The menu “highlights ingredients from local and organic farmers as well as over 100 local wines.” As if that “taste of Sonoma County” weren’t enough to tempt you, the building and ambience in the restaurant are intimate, reflecting its reputation as a family gathering spot for generations. They are very accommodating to children and families and I have literally NEVER had a bad dish here. In fact everything I’ve ever eaten here has been memorable both for the flavors and the experience. I highly recommend the Burrata and Prosciutto appetizer and Lasagna.

Diavola Pizzaria & Salumeria    21021 Geyserville Ave, Geyserville, CA 95441

If you are a foodie, you are exploring Geyserville around lunchtime, or your child insists on eating pizza for every meal, Diavola Restaurant is the place for you. Neopolitan style pizza, handmade pasta, house cured salami, and daily changing menu is delicious and also features farms, ranches and fisheries guided by principles of sustainability. Eating mindfully has rarely tasted so good. The last time we visited we feasted on the Arugula and Local Fennel Salad and the Cha Cha Cha pizza. Both were incredible.

Mercury Wines    21015 Geyserville Avenue, Geyserville, CA 95441

In my not so humble opinion, Sonoma County wines are far superior to other-regions-that-shall-remain-nameless for a number of reasons. Mercury, to me, embodies all of these. Unpretentious, unfailingly friendly, and passionate about both innovation and tradition, Mercury wines are the real deal. A visit to their tasting room leaves you feeling like a welcome friend (whether tourist or local). (I mean, how can you not love a winery that features an annual wine club “Family Reunion and Pig Roast Hootenanny” and cornhole tournament?!) Their wines and people are among my favorites and their tasting room is frequented by Freddie (namesake of Freddie Cuvee), a docile and adorable labrador retriever who kept my son giggling while my husband and I tasted and chatted.

Gin’Gilli’s Vintage Home    21079 Geyserville Ave, Geyserville, CA 95441

This. Each time I come to Geyserville, I make a trip to Gin’Gilli’s. Made up of a collection of different stalls, Gin’Gilli’s is full of treasures and eye candy. While there is lots to look at, there are also lots of tempting things to touch, so I recommend this experience for those moms flying solo or with children who can be trusted to look with their eyes at some pieces and handle others with care. For those with children old enough to appreciate artifacts of American life, it provides an opportunity to share memories of your childhood and your family with your littles. It also is a great place to empty your wallet if you are like me and love finding rare treasures to fill your home or to give as gifts. I never walk out empty handed and always enjoy my aisle meanderings here.

Bosworth & Son General Mercantile    21060 Geyserville Ave, Geyserville, CA 95441

Bosworth & Son General Mercantile began selling “groceries, dry goods, and gents’ furnishings” in 1911. Today, the store sells western wear, hats, boots and horse tack, among many other things. They also sell a number of neat things for babies and toddlers (when I was last there I bought a pair of Minnetonka moccasins for my son at an amazingly reasonable price). Whether you are looking to buy, or just explore a modern store with a bygone era feel, Bosworth & Son is a must see.

There are so many reasons to love the community of Geyserville. Its picturesque setting between the hills of the Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys, its close knit feel, and the prevalence of proud independent businesses highlights the best Sonoma County has to offer. Whether you are a local in need of a daytime adventure or a tourist looking to get off the beaten path, I highly recommend a trip to this beautiful town.
