In the summer we try to hit the beach – my happy place – at least a couple times a month. Although the water is always frigid compared to the East Coast waters of my youth (I’ve only gone swimming in the ocean three times in my 12 years in California), the NorCal beaches are truly some of the most beautiful in the world. Here are just a few of the reasons this mama loves the beach.
Why Our Cold NorCal Beaches are Mama’s Happy Place
Sunshine = Happiness
While I try to stay covered up and sunscreen’ed most of the time, I always give myself a few minutes of pure bliss in the sun. I know it’s bad for my skin, but it just feels so. Darn. Good. And it turns out that there’s actual science behind this! Studies have shown that vitamin D can improve mood, in addition to a host of other benefits.
The ocean puts things into perspective
Looking out over the endless expanse of blue water, I can’t help but feel at peace. There’s just something about the vastness of the ocean – like the night sky – that puts things into perspective, reminding me that the small nagging annoyances of daily life are not worth stressing about.
It’s a family affair
I grew up enjoying summers on the beaches of Long Island, and my husband’s family spent weekends at the Jersey Shore, so I guess it’s no surprise our kids are carrying on the beach-loving tradition. Whether it’s swimming, boogie boarding, building castles, walking, collecting shells, playing soccer, or burying each other in the sand, there really is no place I’ve seen my kids more contented. Plus, they even play by themselves at the beach, letting me just relax in a chair and sometimes even read a magazine.
The best kind of tired
No other activity on Earth tires my kids out like a day at the beach. Without fail, both will pass out five minutes into the car ride home. I sneak a peek into the back seat and see their beautiful faces, sun-kissed and fast asleep. Then I relish in the peaceful, quiet ride home from a perfect day at the beach.
