Winter here in Wine Country is definitely not the white wonderland I enjoyed growing up in Upstate New York. I miss the magic of snow falling, the coziness of snuggling under down blankets, and the excitement of snow days. But I will admit that I enjoy those 70 degree days in February! Balmy winters mean that I have to try a little harder to expose (pun intended) my kids to a quintessential snowy winter, whether it be through a trip to Tahoe or through some wonderful wintertime books.
My kids certainly have their holiday favorites (like the classic ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas and new addition A Hannukah with Mazel). However, here are some non-holiday wintertime books that we will enjoy throughout this winter season.
5 Heartwarming Wintertime Books to Enjoy with Your Children
Over and Under the Snow by This lovely book allows kids to peek into the secret underground world of animals in winter.
Blizzard by John Rocco
This is the story of a town shut down by a blizzard and the smart, brave kid who ventures out to the store for provisions. My four-year-old loves the fold out map that tracks the adventure.
Learning to Ski with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen
Kids love the wacky adventures of Mr. Magee and his dog, Dee. You will probably find yourself reading the rhyming prose over and over and over…
The Storm Whale in Winter by Benji Davies
This is the wintry sequel to the story of Noi and his friend, a whale. Beautiful illustrations highlight the sweet tale of friendship.
Owl Moon by Jane Yolen, illustrated by Ever since I was little, I’ve loved this classic tale of a little kid enjoying a special tradition with their father. With its award-winning illustrations, this is one of my all-time favorites any time of year.
