How to Have a Fun and Successful Family Date Night

How to Have a Fun and Successful Family Date NightKeeping the love tank full is important in all relationships. With date nights that seem less frequent and more difficult to plan (especially once kids appear in the picture), it’s easy to feel stuck in a rut. However, I’ve got some fun family date night ideas that can easily include the kids. As long as you pack a few essentials (outlined below) and an extra dash of patience, you will have a fun and successful family date night.

5 Family Date Night Ideas

Family Picnic

Visit one of the great Wine Country picnic spots for this date night idea, and remember there is no need to limit yourselves to local parks. Head towards the coast for a sunset picnic or have an adventurous bite under the redwood trees. Want less prep time? Visit one of our local cheese factories before your picnic. You can purchase food on-site and enjoy the local flavors at their nearby tables. Just call ahead to make sure the shop or deli is open at the time of your visit.

Essentials for the kids:

  • Wet wipes
  • Extra layers (the smell of Pumpkin Spice tells me Fall is here)
  • A sweet treat

Essentials for the parents:

  • Something to sit on (forget chasing the kids – relax and let them run wild)
  • A jacket
  • Your favorite beverage

Hiking

The emphasis here is on the fun rather than the exercise or competition, so choose a hike that the whole family can easily walk without too much effort. Distract the kids when they become clingy with wildlife games. Let them search for objects or count animals along the way – anything that might let you get a little adult conversation in while they’re busy. Remember to keep crank levels at a minimum and schedule the hike for after nap time! Or if you’re feeling brave, schedule the hike to occur before nap time. Tire them out so the little ones go down easier and their nap lasts a little longer. Extra date time!

Essentials for the kids:

  • Water
  • Change of clothes
  • A stick (collect one on the hike – it’s amazing how something so small will keep them entertained)

Essentials for the parents:

  • Water
  • Backpack (for all the essentials)
  • Your smartphone or small camera to quickly capture hiking memories

Food Trucks

Living in Wine Country means access to some of the best foods by local chefs. Food Trucks are popping up everywhere now, so there’s no need to make reservations at non-family-friendly restaurants. Stay local or head to one of the great San Francisco Food Truck events. Check ahead for the food truck schedules, as they do occasionally have rare days off.  Be sure to keep these links handy for a quick search for both the local and City food trucks

Essentials for the kids:

  • A toddler leash (yeah, I said it!)
  • Snacks that are quick and easy (to stop the meltdown while standing in line)
  • Small toys

Essentials for the parents:

  • Small backpack (for all the essentials and leftovers)
  • Wet wipes
  • Cash, as not all trucks accept credit cards

Movie Night

A little planning might be needed for this one so you don’t end up spending the first hour trying to choose a movie. Remember – this is Date Night, not Kids Night. The choice does NOT need to be voted on or be animated – there are plenty of old classic movies suitable for the family. To name a few: Herbie, Little Rascals, The Parent Trap, Daddy Day Care, and Troop Beverly Hills. For once Google might be able to help you! Lay a mattress or sleeping bags on the floor for the kids. Parents get to sit together on the couch holding hands (YAY!), and try to ignore the cold stares from the little ones!

Essentials for the kids:

  • Popcorn
  • Soft toy
  • A candy bribe

Essentials for the parents:

  • Popcorn (yes, your own bowl)
  • Warm blanket
  • Plenty of hand holding

Ice Cream Sunday!

Take it easy and head to your local ice cream spot on Sunday for a Sundae date! See what I did there?! Gaze at your partner over that yummy ice cream. Okay, maybe that is going too far! However, on this special Sunday you must order YOUR favorite flavor instead of waiting to see if the kids leave you their melted leftovers. And by no means is this date night idea limited to Sundays, but you do have to order a big sundae. Indulge in the triple scoop with extra toppings! After all, it’s not everyday that guilt-free desserts happen!

Essentials for the kids:

  • Zero input on flavors or how many from the adults
  • No input on size from the adults
  • Absolutely no sharing

Essentials for the parents:

  • Your own spoon
  • Lots of toppings
  • Again, no sharing
