Wardrobe MVPs: How to Dress to Impress Every Day

If you’re anything like me, you start your morning like you’re about to run a marathon.

You race to get up before the kids, take a shower, and stumble into your closet to figure out what you’re going to wear. Then it’s off to make lunches, do your children’s hair, search for headbands, homework folders, library books, matching shoes, brush teeth, and remember your purse as you get in the car. However, I am a FIRM believer that if you look good, you feel good. Because of that, I do whatever I can to have my clothes dialed in each morning. And it starts with making sure that my closet has some heavy hitters (wardrobe MVPs, in my book).

It’s the number one way I can fake that I have it together.

After too many mornings of starting off on the wrong foot and frantically ironing or searching for clean clothes to wear, I decided that my life is a lot easier when I have a few wardrobe MVPs in my closet to get me out the door quicker. They also ensure that I look put together in no time.

So, whether you find yourself wearing the same kind of “uniform” everyday or you tend to change it up each day, the following are items that help me feel good and look good.

Trench Coat

I wear my trench coats year round. Since we aren’t blessed with snow in the winter, you can wear a light jacket over layers and instantly look pulled together. Leave it open or cinch it at the waist, the trench coat is a timeless and classic piece that will never go out of style. To make one of your most versatile wardrobe MVPs, get one that has a removable hood. This ensures you get year-round wear out it and it will still keep you dry in the rain. My favorites are here:

Leopard Print Belt

A leopard print belt can take a basic white tee and jeans outfit to a whole new level of sass. It’s an element of surprise that adds a pattern between solids. I go through about two per year because I wear one with everything. No joke, I’m wearing one now. I have no shame in mixing my leopard belt with a plaid top, solid sweaters, or print blouses. It’s a true MVP that will make you feel magical in the morning and like you are on your fashion game.

Neutral Flats

Whether you’re home or in the office each day, a pair of neutral flats will go with casual or dressy outfits. Whether pointy toe or round, they’re practical and chic. During the warmer months, wearing flats with skirts or dresses also makes your legs look longer. Hello – I’ll take that any day.

Basic Sweater

A basic sweater in a neutral color will always be in style. I tend to go heavy on white and navy in my closet. I always make sure to have a couple sweaters of each neutral, as it’s the perfect thing to throw on with jeans, skirts, or even shorts during the summer.  A cashmere or soft cashmere blend holds up the best, but many places carry basic sweaters (like the styles below) year round.

Statement Necklaces

I love a good statement necklace. It’s another great way to add sprinkles to an otherwise vanilla sundae. Wearing a pear of jeans and a basic sweater? Throw on a baubles necklace and boom! No one will know you wore that sweater two days ago.

When I find a piece of clothing I love, I stock up in other colors. This includes solid and print dresses that are easy to throw on. Some days, you just don’t want to worry about matching or wearing anything with a waistband. In addition, when you throw on a dress your style-o-meter skyrockets. You won’t ever regret wearing a dress. Except on windy days. Don’t wear a dress on a windy day.

The Non-clothing MVP

Finally, the last of the wardrobe MVPs (and a very recent find) is not a clothing piece, but a mini steamer. Up until recently, I would iron each morning. It would take me a good 10 minutes to iron a blouse, and that’s 10 minutes I don’t have. Plus, I had to iron in the laundry room located across the house from my closet. I heard about this snazzy steamer and picked it up at Target after Christmas. Now I keep it under the sink in our master bath and pull it out each morning to steam my clothes. It literally takes two minutes MAX. It has changed my life. True story.

Making sure you have these wardrobe MVPs at the ready will definitely boost your getting dressed productivity. More importantly, they’ll make you look and feel good.  Even if you just had to pull your dog away from the toilet, who was getting a morning drink the second before you walk out the door.
