Recipes for Two of the Best Lactation Treats in the World

Recipes for Two of the Best Lactation Treats in the WorldBreastfeeding is still one of the hardest things I’ve ever done in my life! Before my due date, I diligently prepared my pantry and fridge with things to make life easier for the tireless days and weeks ahead. Along with the tubs of frozen bone broth, I prepared bags of cookie dough and pre-sliced brownies to help with lactation (and mostly just treat myself). I think these are the best lactation treats in the world because they were the only treats I was allowed with my postpartum meal plan.

So while you’re nourishing your sweet little babe, here are two recipes to treat yourself!

Chocolate Chip Lactation Cookies

I modified these from a favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe I’ve been using since college. There a tons of lactation cookie options and several recipes on Pinterest. There was overlap in ingredients, so I just decided to use one of my usual recipes and incorporate those ingredients I kept seeing in every other lactation treats recipe.
Pro-tip: Brewers yeast and flaxseed meal are easy to find in the bulk bins at stores like Whole Foods or Oliver’s!

Dry Ingredients

2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour
½ tsp salt
2 ½ cups oatmeal (pre-ground in blender)
½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp baking powder

Lactation Ingredients

5 tbsp brewers yeast
3 tbsp flaxseed meal

Creaming Ingredients

1 cup butter
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 tbsp coconut oil

Treat yourself ingredients (optional)

12 oz chocolate chips (entire package of chocolate chips)
4 oz your choice — chocolate shavings, nuts, candies, etc.

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Combine all Dry Ingredients and Lactation Ingredients in one bowl.
  • In a separate bowl or stand mixer, combine the Creaming Ingredients. Once incorporated, slowly add dry ingredients until cookie dough forms.
  • Hand mix the chocolate chips into the dough.
  • Roll into balls and bake for 8 – 10 min at 350 (in preheated oven) depending on size. Any remaining balls can be frozen and stored for 6 months (if they can last that long!)

Lactation Brownies

Modified from a Pinterest recipeI prepared one tray (sans frosting included). It was a difficult task waiting for them to cool then cut, only to be wrapped and stored in the freezer. These lactation treats are delicious, and it took every ounce of willpower to avoid eating the entire tray.

Dry Ingredients

1/3 cup of cocoa powder
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp baking powder

Lactation Ingredients

1/4 tsp fenugreek
3 tbsp brewer’s yeast

Creaming Ingredients

1/2 cup melted butter
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup granulated sugar

Treat yourself ingredients (optional)

Anything else you love in or on top of brownies!

Directions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Line an 8X8 pan with natural parchment paper.
  • Combine all Dry Ingredients and Lactation Ingredients in one bowl.
  • In a separate bowl or stand mixer, combine the Creaming Ingredients. Stir in the dry ingredients until smooth brownie batter comes together.
  • Pour the batter into the lined 8×8 pan.
  • Bake for 20 minutes.
  • Remove from the oven and allow to cool before cutting. Can be stored in freezer wrapped individually or devoured in one sitting.

Happy (tr)eating for two! And if you have any favorite lactation treats, link the recipe in the comments below.
