April 2016 Guide to Family Friendly Wine Country


Parades, plant sales, plays and more, April 2016 is chock full of fun options for the whole family! We’ve curated an extensive list of all of wine country’s events for this spring month by date. Below each event is a clickable link to purchase tickets or find out more information. Many of these events are cheap or free and heaps of fun! Hope to see you out and about!

Free Night at the Planetarium

April 1st | 7 and 8:30PM showings: Tonight we present April’s “First Friday Night Sky” program. Come enjoy the night sky with your kids! Although admission is free, donations to support SRJC’s Planetarium are greatly appreciated.

SofA's April Fool's Celebration

April 1st | 4-8 pm Express your inner fool at Fool for Art, a special open studio event in honor of April Fool’s Day. Wear your most foolish hat, and bring the whole family. Take part in the Jester Treasure Hunt by visiting the participating SofA District art studios.

11th Annual Occidental Fools Parade

April 2nd | 1pm  Calling all Fools! Meet and set up 12-1 pm at Community Center (Bohemian Hwy @ Graton Rd. across from OCA). Parade wends its silly way through town, ending at Occidental Center for the Arts front parking lot for spontaneous merriment! Frolic with mad-cap folks and The Hub Bub Club! Coronate the Foolish King & Queen! Enjoy BBQ and Lunapillar rides and more!

Astronaut Lullabies

April 3rd | 3pm SRJC Planetarium “Astronaut Lullabies” returns this spring semester. Our special live concerts staring Sonoma County singer-songwriters Jim and Kathy Ocean returns with science and astronomy related songs.  Admission tickets ($15 general/$10 student and senior) can be purchased at the door starting 30 minutes before the scheduled show start time. Tickets also available on-line at Eventbrite.

Hot Dog Air Show

April 7th | 11:30-1:30 Pacific Coast Air Museum On the first Thursday of the month (April-Oct.) the $5 admission to this fun air museum includes a large hot dog, chips, chili, and soda or water. See vintage aircraft and learn about their history.

Jail Industries Plant Sale

April 9th | 9am-12p Cash and checks are accepted at the Saturday plant sales. Bring your own wheel barrow or wagon to transport your plants! Plenty of California natives, succulents, and Sonoma Superstars to choose from. We have a variety of trees, and many, many one gallon ($2.50) plants now available and ready to plant

Sheep Shearing at the Adobe

April 9th | 11-1 pm Join our shearer as he demonstrates current and traditional methods of shearing. Tickets at the door: $3 dollars for kids, $2 dollars kids, 5 and under are free.

Santa Rosa Philharmonic Spring Kids Concert

April 9th | 1:30 pm A very special event for kids featuring the music of Spanish composers Manuel de Falla, Joaquín Turina and Gerónimo Giménez. Music at the concert will be narrated both in Spanish and English , and there will be small surprise give-aways for the kids during the performance. The concert is set to last about 45 minutes. After the concert, we will be hosting a family fair in collaboration with Via Esperanza/CAP Sonoma featuring face painting, balloon-animal making for the kids, and information booths for parents. The concert is free of charge for everyone, but tickets much be obtained at the door just prior to entering the auditorium.

Gloria Ferrer Bubbles and Blooms

April 9th | 12-4pm Let us help you get ready for Spring and Summer entertaining! Join us for a day of Gloria Ferrer award winning wines and chef prepared tasty bites, perfect ideas for your warm evening get-together! Meet professionals from Flower Magazine and learn creative floral arranging, displays, wreaths, and more! See colorful flower art installations perfect for special occasions. Get inspired with DIY tips for highlighting your indoor/outdoor décor. Test your luck winning raffle prizes ranging from floral arrangements to garden equipment!

April 9th | 6:30-7:15pm Take the whole family down to Cheryl Teach Music for a free jam session!

Bodega Bay Fisherman’s Festival

April 9th & 10th | all day Since 1973, this event has celebrated our local fisherman and it’s when salmon season is kicked off with a blessing of the fleet. The Festival is packed with events for people of all ages: craft booths, live music, good food, entertainment and more.

Story Pirates at LBC

April 10th | 3pm Recommended for All Ages Back by popular demand! Described as “Monty Python meets Schoolhouse Rock,” Story Pirates create outlandishly funny sketches and mini-musicals based on stories submitted by children!

The Tall Ships in Bodega

April 16th | 9-12pm The tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain return to Spud Point Marina next month for dockside tours and battle sails. Costumed crews will host walk-ons April 14-17 and take ticket-holders out to sea for mock skirmishes April 16 & 17. Owned by the nonprofit Grays Harbor Historical Seaport of Washington, the replicas of colonial-era trading ships last sailed into Bodega Harbor in 2012 and 2013, attracting visitors from around the North Bay. Battle sail tickets are available now.

Apple Blossom Parade Sebastapol

April 16th | 10am-Main Street Sebastapol People come from miles around to enjoy our parade. Authentic hand-made floats, amazing animals, and colorful displays delight all.

Apple Blossom Festival

April 16th + 17th | 10-6 (Sat.) 10-5 (Sun.) Ives Park, Sebastapol Music and more at the 70th Annual Apple Blossom Festival! Join us in the Rose Garden at the festival for children’s activities on the farm. McDonald Farms is here along with Mitcho Thompson and his animal surprises and activities. $12 for adults, kids under 10 are free.

Earth Day Celebration at Quarry Hill

April 16th | 11am-3pm Earth Day Celebration at Quarryhill Plant Sale and fun activities for all ages! Music from Sonoma Hometown Band, Birds of Prey from the Rescue Center, Free Popcorn from Reading Cinemas and much more! Free Admission, Parking: $5 per car

Children's Museum of Sonoma County: Science Speaker

April 21st | 5:30-7pm How to Think of an Invention with guest speaker, Michael McGinnis Ever wonder how to come up with ideas, or how to make something that you use work better? I would like to show you how to figure that out. It is OK to make lots of mistakes as long as you keep trying!

Earth Day at Safari West

April 22nd | 11-3pm Earth Day observes and celebrates the environmental health of the Earth, emphasizing the need for a clean and healthy environment for all living things. This year on Earth Day, the lawn in front of the Amani Oasis aviary will be transformed. Kids at the planting tables will be learning about the basics and benefits of organic gardening as they plant their own vegetables and flowers in biodegradable starter cups. Alongside our lawn of learning, we’ll have safari treks departing every 45 minutes.

HowEARTH Day at Howarth Park

April 22nd | 2:30-5:30PM HowEarth Day It’s a celebration of our planet for the little ones! And what better place to spend Earth Day than in the beauty of Santa Rosa’s Howarth Park? Enjoy FREE activities and nature themed displays for children! K-Land attractions will also be open, so come enjoy Howarth Park’s train, carousel, or jump house for $2 per ticket or take advantage of the Earth Day Special, a $5 unlimited ride bracelet!

Onstage at Courthouse Square

23rd 2016 | 12pm-4pm Join Santa Rosa for our 7th Annual Earth Day Festival Downtown. This fun, FREE, and family-friendly Festival is a great way to inspire awareness and build community through environmental protection. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy great food, live performances OnStage at Courthouse Square, local and earth friendly products, and eco-friendly crafts and activities for kids.

Plant Sale Harvest for the Hungry

April 23rd | 9am-2pm  We finance the Harvest Garden by holding one plant sale every spring. We offer thousands of organically grown  vegetables (heirloom tomatoes, squash, peppers, and eggplants), and flowering annuals and perennials (many are California natives). Our plant sale gives us a chance to share the Garden, educate people about organic growing techniques, habitat restoration, and water-wise gardening.

Petaluma’s Butter & Egg Days Parade

April 23rd | 12pm The parade celebrates all things Petaluma, the history and the stories we love to tell. This year the Parade will celebrate the arrival of the SMART Train in 2016, sharing stories of the impact railway had in shaping our hometown’s historic past and making it the place it is today. And looking toward the future, what the revival of a passenger train will mean to our hometown’s businesses, residents, schools, and nonprofits.

Petaluma’s Butter & Egg Days Festival

April 23rd |10-4 We will have music, family fun activities, a multitude of food vendors, beer gardens, arts & crafts booth, sampling and more in the A Street Parking lot on 4th St., on Western Avenue between Kentucky St. and Petaluma Blvd N., on B St. and on 2nd St.

History Walking Tour-Santa Rosa Rural Cemetary

April 23rd | 10:00am, 10:20am, 10:40am & 11:00am Experience the history and learn the stories of the people of Sonoma County and California during an 80 minute docent-led walk through this pioneer cemetery. Note that there are uneven surfaces and slopes. Meet at the Franklin Gate.

The 3rd Annual Windsor Chili Cook-Off

April 23rd  | 12 to 4 p.m. Meet us at Market Street at the Windsor Town Green. Tickets are $20 and kids 12 and under are free. Admission includes 23 servings of delicious, homemade chili and a chunk of Costeaux Bakerys 6-ft. corn bread.

Spreckle's Theater Presents The Little Mermaid

April 28  | 7pm Come and gather with the REACH Community to celebrate the arts in education, and raise funds in support of enrichment at REACH School. Arrive at 7 pm for a half-hour social gathering and to preview some of our school auction items (the online auction also launches on April 28). The concession booth will be open for wine, beverages and treats.

Children’s Day at the Mission

April 30th | 11-3pm Join us at the Mission Solano in Sonoma! Candle making, wool weaving, games and more. Children are free, adults are $3

Independent Bookstore Day {Petaluma Copperfield's}

April 30th | 11:00am Featured Book: The Mommy Book, The Daddy Book & multiple others  Todd Parr is the author of more than thirty books for children, including the New York Times-bestselling The I Love You Book, The Earth Book, and The Thankful Book. He lives in Berkeley, California with three dogs, and he says it’s okay to eat macaroni and cheese in the bathtub, though he hasn’t actually admitted doing it. Want to know for sure?  C’mon down and ask!

The Eco-Friendly Garden Tour

April 30th  | 10am-4pm This tour is a public outreach and education program that promotes sustainable landscaping practices by showcasing inspiring gardens throughout Sonoma County and North Marin. The Tour highlights Russian River-Friendly and Bay-Friendly landscaping best practices, and supports QWEL certified professionals by featuring their personal or client’s gardens. The Eco-Friendly Garden Tour is self-guided and is provided free of charge.

Blossoms, Bees, & Barnyard Babies

April 30th and May 1st | 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tour your way through Sonoma County and visit farms of your choice. Sonoma County farms are abundant with seedlings and barnyard babies. Pack up the family and head out to the farm to celebrate Spring and see what’s flowering!  Activities include farm tours, demonstrations, animal petting, games and crafts for kids, tastings, cooking demos, flower arranging, and more. Many stops will offer snacks, lunches and epic picnic sites. Farm stands will be open for fresh-from-the-source purchases.

Downtown Eats & Beats

April 30th | 12pm-5pm Downtown Eats and Beats a day of food, wine and brews, and music! Meet us in Old Courthouse Square, in Santa Rosa. Enjoy food from your favorite Sonoma County food trucks, live music from Simply Amazing, DJ-ing from Anderson Entertainment, lawn games and more!  Plus, vote for your favorite food truck in the People’s Choice Award.
